Colorado College Block Plan. The Block Plan, which Colorado College adopted in 1970, divides the academic year into eight three-and-a-half week segments. Students sign up for one principal course at a time. Depending on the type of material being taught, courses can last from one bloc to two or three blocks.
Benefits of this type of schedule are many. First off, all courses are given equal importance, allowing students to focus their undivided attention. Secondly, classes are small with the average size being 16 students. Rarely are there formal lectures while there is an abundance of seminar discussions and active laboratories. The essence of the Block Plan is that the student takes an active rather than a passive role in learning.
