Cheyenne Mountain Zoo Exhibits. Nearly 800 animals make their home at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, the only mountain zoo in the United States. Exhibits range from African Rift Valley and Budgie Buddies to Asian Highlands and the Monkey Pavilion.
African Rift Valley. Amazing adventures abound in the African Rift Valley. Discover the largest zoo giraffe herd, a multitude of meerkats, swinging colobus monkeys, and a talking baobab tree. Other animals that populate this award-winning exhibit are zebra, griffin vultures, kori bustards, red river hogs, and lesser kudu antelope. African Rift Valley activities include feeding crackers to the giraffes, visiting the research outpost, relaxing at the children's play village, and climbing the view tower for an unbelievable look at the zoo and beyond.
Budgie Buddies. This Australian exhibit is for the birds. An indoor aviary boasts hundreds of free-flight Australian budgies (parakeets), Australian finches, cockatiels, and princess parrots. If you’ve got a seed stick, you may get a visit from one of these colorful birds looking for a snack. The aviary is open to walk through from March through September. During the rest of the year, it’s open for viewing only.
Asian Highlands. Explore Asian Highlands where a variety of cagey cats reside. Enjoy watching Amur tigers (formerly Siberian), Pallas' cats, and rare Amur leopards. Another highlight of this exhibit is the architecture that evokes a Himalayan monastery.
Monkey Pavilion. Since 1942, the Monkey Pavilion has been a very popular exhibit. Check out a variety of species, many of which are either threatened or endangered in their natural habitats. These peppy primates include black-crested mangabeys, lesser spot-nosed monkeys, black howler monkeys, white-cheeked gibbons, black and white ruffed lemurs, and ring-tailed lemurs.
